DISTINCTION  ( CHEMICAL TEST ) TOPIC :-  ALCOHOL                                                            CLASS 12   {ONE MARKS}

        (CLASS IX, X , XI , XII , NEET and JEE)

1 PRIMARY , SECONDARY AND TERTIARY ALCOHOL :-

 (A)  LUCAS TEST  :-- In this test , an alcohol is treated with  lucas reagent ( conc. HCl and anhydrous ZnCl2)  the alcohol get converted into alkyl halide . The alkyl halide insoluble in water and its appeared in the form cloudiness solution . the time required different for different alcohols for appearance of cloudiness

(i) if turbidity (cloudiness solution) appear immediately  , the alcohol tertiary

(ii)if turbidity (cloudiness solution) appear with in 5 minutes  , the alcohol secondary

(iii) if turbidity (cloudiness solution) appear only upon heating   , the alcohol primary

2 VICTOR MEYERS TEST

in this test following step  involves

(i) The ROH treated with red P and Iodine resulting formation of RI
(ii)The RI treated with AgNO2 to convert into nitro alkane
(iii) The nitro alkane is finally  react with nitrous acid and the resulting solution is made alkaline

if

 (i)  blood red color appearance  indicate primary alcohol

                          (ii) Blue color appearance  indicate secondary  alcohol                                                  (iii) colorless solution  appearance  indicate tertiary  alcohol
